  1. The dressing placed in your mouth is for your comfort and for protection of the operative site. SMALL PIECES OR ENTIRE PACKING MAY BREAK OFF. This is ALRIGHT as long as you can rinse to keep the area clean and you are comfortable.

  2. Take medications as directed. You may take Tylenol, Advil, or whatever you normally take for pain. You will get an antibiotic; this you must take - it will help to prevent infection. You will also get perioguard; this you will also need to get filled and you can start it in 24 hrs., it will help keep the plaque count down until you can start brushing. You will also get a pain medication; this is up to you if you think you'll need it.

  3. To prevent swelling, ICE should be applied to your face in the area operated on, using it for 10 minutes and then leaving it off for 10 minutes. This should be continued for 2-3 hours the first day of surgery. If swelling persists beyond the first 24 hours, apply heat instead of ice.

  4. Slight swelling and/or bruising the 1st or 2nd day is normal, however, if swelling begins after 3 or 4 days, call the office.

  5. Some sutures will dissolve, others we will take out at your post op appointment.

  6. You are permitted to eat or drink whatever you like. We advise you to stay away from small seeds, hot and spicy foods, and sharp foods such as chips and doritos. Try to keep food away from surgery area. DO NOT use a straw today.

  7. Absolutely NO BRUSHING, flossing or proxabrushing where you had surgery, until told otherwise by Dr. Herman. Start to rinse with warm salt water rinses the day after surgery. (About 8oz. water/l tsp. salt)

  8. There may be occasional bloodstains in your saliva during the first day - this is normal. If the bleeding becomes excessive, place a wet regular tea bag on the area with light pressure for 15 minutes - remove and repeat. If bleeding persists, call the office.

  9. Please feel flee to call the office at (570)743-1155 if there are any problems. We have a 24-hour answering service.
